Whether you’re walking to school, biking to work, riding an e-bike to the train station, or using an e-scooter for a short trip, choosing active transportation can improve your health, reduce traffic congestion, lower transportation costs, and help create cleaner, more connected communities.

Through education, outreach, and partnerships, we encourage people of all ages and abilities to consider walking, biking, or using other micromobility options whenever possible.

What is Micromobility?

Micromobility refers to lightweight, low-speed transportation options designed for short-distance travel. These devices help connect people to destinations and public transit while reducing reliance on personal vehicles.

Common examples include:

• Bicycles
• Electric bicycles (e-bikes)
• Electric scooters (e-scooters)
• Skateboards and electric skateboards
• Other small personal mobility devices

New Jersey E-Bike Requirements

If you ride an e-bike in New Jersey, it’s important to know that the state’s new e-bike requirements are now in effect. Riders are required to have a valid driver’s license or e-bike license, register their e-bike with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJMVC), and carry insurance if operating a motorized bicycle (any with a throttle). Helmets are required for all e-bike riders, regardless of age.
