SAFETEA-LU Signed Into Law
The Safe, Accountable, Flexible,
Efficient Transportation Equity Act – A
Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU) was signed into
law by President Bush on August
10, 2005. SAFETEA-LU amends Titles 23 and 49
of the US Code and authorizes $286 billion over
the next five years for transportation projects
nationwide. This legislation renews federal funds
for highway and transit programs designed to
replace the Transportation Equity Act for the
21st Century (TEA-21).
New Jersey will receive $8 billion for transportation
projects, which includes $5.6 billion for construction
of highways, roads and bridges. The State will
receive another $2.45 billion in transit aid
over the next six years.
Cross County Connection’s service area
will receive $149 million in earmarked project
funds. Specifically, the PATCO high speed rail
line from Camden County to Philadelphia will
receive $50 million for rehabilitation of the
rail cars. The Route 42 and I-295 Direct Connect
Project will receive $29 million. The BurLink
bus service will receive $3.3 million for vehicles
and equipment. Bicycle and pedestrian projects
in Cross County Connection’s service area
will receive $3.4 million.
